2. TOYYIBAN SUSHI, BANGI GATEWAY

The only Muslim-owned sushi restaurant, Toyyiban Sushi is a family business that was started up by a Malaysian who once studied in Japan. Even though they don’t have a large selection on their menu, it is a cosy restaurant that carries some of the best Halal dishes in Kuala Lumpur.

For a cosy and personal experience, check out Toyyiban Sushi located at Bangi Gateway. A family business and owned by a local Muslim who once studied in Japan, Toyyiban Sushi named themselves after the verse in the Qur’an (Surah Al Maidah 5:88) where Allah commanded Muslims to consume “Halalan Toyyiban”, Toyyiban meaning good and Halal meaning their sushi!

Although they don’t have a wide selection of sushi compared to bigger sushi retails, Toyyiban Sushi is an intimate restaurant and you will get a personalised experience. Many customers love their crispy fried sushi coupled with spicy soy sauce and wasabi - it’s like eating deep fried banana fritters, only its sushi! You know how us Malaysians love our deep fried food

If you need to eat more than just sushi, Toyyiban Sushi also serves choices of noodles like Udon and Soba, as well as Bento for a reasonable price compared to others. What’s best about this place is that they also give a local twist where they serve sambal kicap (spicy soy sauce) as an option to the traditional wasabi and soy sauce.

3. BABE GASTRO

Michelin-starred Chef Jeff Ramsey is clearly passionate about creating delicious, technically exquisite food.

“Babe is about fun dining as opposed to fine dining. It’s about enjoying the spirit of sharing our signature ‘Japas’ (modern Japanese tapas) with your favourite people and stunning views of the city skyline. We want to create great food that inspires the taste buds and a dining experience that evokes the senses.” Jeff Ramsey

Babe is an amalgamation of Ramsey’s artful finesse for progressive modernist cuisine and the Clearwater Xperience’s signature boutique sophistication (the purveyors of original concept eateries such as Ploy and Way Modern Chinois). Serving up Japanese-accented tapas, or “Japas” as Ramsey has coined, Babe will be focused on a unique ‘fun dining’ experience as opposed to the structured world of ‘fine dining’.

The menu at Babe offers an exquisite mix of flavors, textures, and temperatures, promising an unparalleled multi-sensory dining experience. True to the tapas concept, the “Japas” menu at Babe is sharing-style, believing that social interaction enhances the overall dining pleasure.

4. NOBU KUALA LUMPUR

Nobu Kuala Lumpur is a Michelin-starred titan in the world of sushi, sashimi and tempura. The world famous restaurant, co-owned by American actor Robert De Niro, first started out in 1994 in New York. It went on to win critical acclaim for its glorious dishes that were classically comforting yet creative, and chef Nobu Matsuhisa and his partners went on take the world by storm, opening more than 29 franchises over the globe.

Nobu Kuala Lumpur is Southeast Asia’s first branch with dramatic 360 degree views of the KL city skyline, the restaurant is divided into a dining area with sushi bar and teppanyaki grill, plus there is a lounge and club room. It is located on the 56th floor of Menara Petronas 3 Suria KLCC.

Nobu’s food is unique in the fact that it is a marriage of Asian simplicity with exotic South American (specifically Peruvian) flavours, and diners can expect more than 40 cold and hot dishes on Nobu KL’s menu, with the impeccably luscious fish taking centre stage. Expect the global empire’s signature Latin-tinged dishes such as carefully carved thick slices of black cod with sweet, salty miso, Nobu’s baby corn taco shells with sashimi, soy-lacquered yellowtail with jalapeño and meaty rock shrimp tempura with creamy spicy sauce. Other standout dishes on Nobu KL’s menu include the velvety toro tartar, a savoury fatty chunk of tuna belly, topped with caviar, served with shoyu mixed with wasabi sauce.

Meanwhile, the almost-obscenely lush Chilean sea bass marinated with red jalapeño miso at once smoky, salty and sweet in flavour will certainly be the surefire winner of the night’s meal. An important thing to note is the fact that Nobu KL will be a halal (pork-free) restaurant, enabling it to reach a broader Malaysian market.

5. LUCKY TORA

Be a cool cat and visit Lucky Tora, a fun-dining, modern Japanese restaurant and bar showcasing innovative cuisine and delicious cocktails. Located on Jalan Mesui, the casual restaurant which translates to "lucky tiger" oozes cool vibes, with its Insta-worthy neon sign and chic al fresco dining area. The menu features an interesting array of Japanese fusion dishes example chicken karage, makimono, raw fish, and many more. The super creative people behind Lucky Tora gave them a modern twist with influences from other cuisines such as Thai and Western dishes. What also made people fell in-love with this place is its chill-out vibe and ambiance which reminded me of the famous alleyway cafes in Melbourne with quirky graffiti and artworks tastefully placed around the restaurant.

There is also a sense of playfulness with the entire ambiance which definitely sets it apart from traditional Japanese restaurants.
